OWC Boasts Industry's First 5 Year Warranty for SandForce 6Gb/s SSD

We know solid state drives are fast. We know they don't use any moving parts. And did we mention that they're fast? But the one unknown this early in the SSD game is how reliable they truly are. Conventional wisdom says that without any moving parts, and with garbage collecting schemes that limit the number of writes and rewrites, a well built SSD should potentially last as long as that of the average hard drive.

Only time will prove that theory right or wrong, and in the meantime, OWC is offering customers warm fuzzies in the form of a 5-year warranty for its Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD line. According to OWC, this is the first time a company has ever backed a SandForce-based 6Gb/s SATA Revision 3.0 SSD with an enterprise-class warranty.

"We’re very pleased to offer the industry’s longest warranty coverage on the latest and fastest SSD data interface and make it retroactive on all purchases of our Extreme Pro 6G SSD," said Larry O’Connor, Founder and CEO, Other World Computing. "By building OWC Mercury SSDs with the best components and engineering processes available, we can offer consumers the best pre and post purchase assurances for the ultimate in SSD ownership confidence."

With the Fourth of July approaching, it's worth mentioning that the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD is designed and built in the land of the free and home of the brave. OWC says it feels confident in offering such long warranty on these star spangled SSDs because they utilize Tier1/Grade A synchronous NAND flash chips.

The Pro 6G delivers up to 284MB/s sustained reads and 266MB/s writes on SATA 3Gb/s setups, and up to 559MB/s sustained reads and 527MB/s writes on SATA 6Gb/s setups. Pricing has been set at $298 for 120GB, $570 for 240GB, and $1,280 for 480GB.
