Panasonic Announces Pricing for Lumix GH1

Do you remember Panasonic’s new Lumix DMC-GH1 that can record HD video? Panasonic has finally announced recommended pricing and availability for the camera. Expect the Lumix DMC-GH1 to be available for purchase in June for a suggested retail price of $1,499.95. The camera will come as a kit with the LUMIX G VARIO 14-140mm/F4.0-5.8 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S. lens. This lens features a silent motor and continuous auto focusing capabilities to assist with HD movie recording.

As you’ll recall, the Lumix DMC-GH1 is Panasonic’s latest Micro-Four Thirds camera with a 12.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor that can record high definition videos with built-in Dolby Digital Stereo Creator for quality sound. The camera is capable of recording full HD (1920 x 1080) video at 24 fps or HD video (1280 x 720) movies at 60 fps using an AVCHD format (MPEG-4/H.264).

What’s cool about the Micro Four Thirds Standard is that it eliminates the large, internal mirror that is traditionally used in DSLRs. By eliminating this mirror structure, cameras with the Micro Four Thirds Standard have significantly smaller camera bodies and lenses. The Micro Four Thirds Standard also enables a Live View Finder that lets you preview the effects of different camera settings such as aperture or exposure before snapping a photo.

“Since redefining the traditional DSLR category last year with the LUMIX G1 – which eliminated the internal mirror and thus dramatically reduced size of the camera body and lenses – Panasonic has been working to expand its award-winning LUMIX G Micro Four Thirds System line. Panasonic wants to offer increasingly innovative products and features that make photography fun and easy,” said David Briganti, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “The introduction of the LUMIX GH1, allows photographers of all levels to take superior quality photos and shoot HD video with a more compact, easy-to-use camera that provides increased creative capabilities.”

The Lumix DMC-GH1 also features a 3.0-inch swiveling 460,000-dot high-resolution LCD. In the U.S., the Lumix DMC-GH1 will be available with a black body.
