Pepsi P1 Is A 5.5-inch Caffeine-Free Android Smartphone For China

Are you looking for a phone that pops? If so, and you're willing to either travel to China or import from there, you may be interested in the Pepsi P1. Yup - that Pepsi.

According to a new leak, PepsiCo has signed an agreement with an unknown vendor in China to produce a Pepsi-inspired smartphone. While the vendor is unknown, the leak does help give us some idea of what the phone is all about.

For those wanting high-end specs, this phone fizzles. It's a mid-range option that uses a 1.7GHz MediaTek SoC and is backed by 2GB of memory and 16GB of storage. It's a 5.5 inch device that sports a 1080p display, so despite its value proposition, it should look sharp. Even the battery is pretty potent at 3,000mAh. The phone will ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop, and it's not clear at this point if it will be upgradeable to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Marshmallow Pepsi does sound quite interesting, though.

Pepsi Phone

It's hard to say what will make this phone actually unique outside of its Pepsi branding, and really, that could be all that it is. There's no Pepsi icon on the phone's desktop, but there is an inspired wallpaper. At the back is a small, subtle Pepsi logo.

According to the leak, the Pepsi P1 will cost about $200 USD, so again, it's a mid-range offering. But at that price point, we might just see the phone experience some unexpected success. And really, the phone itself is unexpected. Given the mid-range specs, perhaps we could consider this to be a diet Pepsi P1?

Your move, Coca-Cola.
