Pixel Overload: LG Showcases World’s First 2560x1440 5.5-Inch QHD Smartphone Display
If you think today's crop of smartphones feature fine looking displays, wait until you see what LG Display is cooking up. The South Korean display maker announced that it has developed the world's first Quad HD AH-IPS LCD panel for smartphones, thereby giving us a glimpse of what next generation smartphones shipping in 2014 will be wielding.
The sample LG Display is showing off is a 5.5-inch Quad HD panel that falls into phablet territory. It has a 2560x1440 resolution and 538 pixels per inch (PPI), both of which are the highest of any mobile panel to date, LG Display says.
"LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world’s first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology," said Dr. Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group. "With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market."
If you're keeping count, LG Display's Quad HD panel boasts 4X more pixels than an HD panel with a 1280x720 resolution. What that means for end users is they'll enjoy clearer, more detailed images on their mobile device. Not only that, but LG Display achieved the higher resolution while also slimming down the panel, which measures 1.21mm thin with a 1.2mm bezel, making it the world's slimmest and narrowest panel to date. As a point of comparison, it's 12 percent thinner than the company's 5.2-inch Full HD panel released a month ago.
