PlayStation 4 System Software Update 4.5 Arrives Tomorrow With PS4 Pro ‘Boost Mode’

Sony’s highly anticipated System Software Update 4.50 will launch tomorrow, and with it comes a welcome new feature for PlayStation 4 Pro gamers: Boost Mode. Sony says that Boost Mode will increase performance for “legacy” games that haven’t been specifically optimized to take advantage of the additional firepower found on the PlayStation 4 Pro.

“This can provide a noticeable frame rate boost to some games with variable frame rates, and can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz,” says Sony, which goes on to reveal that gamers may even see reduced game load times with Boost Mode enabled. In some titles, Boost Mode was able to increase frame rates by as much as 38 percent.

Boost Mode isn’t some magic elixir, so it’s not guaranteed to work on every single title that you throw at it, but it’s worth at least testing it out to see if your gaming experience improves.

Boost Mode isn’t all that the 4.50 update brings to the table — Sony has also significantly improved the resolution of 2D images (such as when viewing the home screen) when using PlayStation VR after you’ve dropped out of a game. The max frame rate in Cinematic Mode has also been bumped up from 90Hz to 120Hz. Voice chat is now available when you use Remote Play on Windows, Mac and Xperia hardware and there have also been updates made to the PS Messages and PS Communities apps for iOS and Android.

While System Software Update 4.50, as you can see, brings a number of goodies for owners of both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro, it is likely the latter group that will have the most to celebrate when the update drops on March 9th.
