Groovy PlayStation VR Headset For PS4 Coming In October With $399 Price Tag
That’s a pretty fair price when you consider that the HTC Vive costs $799 and the Oculus Rift will run you $599. And you also have to add in the cost of a pretty beefy PC that’s required to power those VR headsets. If you already own a PS4, the $399 price tag might not seem so bad if you’re looking to fully immerse yourself into the VR experience.
But we must caution you, that seemingly low price tag comes with plenty of strings attached. For starters, it doesn’t include a PlayStation 4 Camera, which is required for PlayStation VR to function (Sony’s claim is that most PS4 gamers already have the camera, so it isn’t bundling it with the VR headset). The PlayStation 4 Camera retails for $59.99, but can be had for around $44 currently on Amazon. The base PlayStation VR also doesn’t come with the the funky Move controller, which retail for $49.99 each (currently $29 via Amazon).
So what exactly do you get for $399? Well, the base PlayStation VR headset will come bundled with stereo headphones, an HDMI cable, a USB cable, processor box and an AC adapter. Sony will offer more feature packed bundles at a later date (we’re assuming complete with the camera and Move controllers), but pricing hasn’t been announced at this time.
When it comes to the PlayStation VR’s hardware, it has a 5.7-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1920x1080 (960x1080 per eye) and can display games with a refresh rate of 90 or 120 frames per second. The headset has 360 degree tacking, a 100-degree field of view and latency of less than 18ms.
As for the gaming lineup, Sony is promising that 50 games will be available the support PlayStation VR between its October launch date and the end of 2016. It should also be noted that the PlayStation 4 will receive an exclusive VR version of Star Wars: Battlefront.
