Plex is once again expanding its expansive list of features with the arrival of Plex Live TV — at least in beta form. Plex Live TV is immediately available to all Plex Pass subscribers, allowing customers to tap into free, over-the-air (OTA) digital broadcasts that can be accessed directly from the familiar Plex interface.

Customers will first need to hook up a digital OTA tuner to their PC or NVIDIA SHIELD TV device. A wide variety of TV tuners are supported, including many models from Hauppauge, AVerMedia, and DVBLogic (more here). Once your hardware is setup, Plex will do the rest by scanning for available channels and populating your local guide information.

In addition, there is full DVR integration, so you will be able to schedule recordings for all your favorite OTA programming with ease through the Plex interface. On the SHIELD TV, you can record to internal storage, USB storage or interface with NAS storage. So, your DVR capacity is only limited by how much storage you have on-site (or in the cloud).

With Plex Pass, you will ll have access to your Live TV programming and your DVR recording anywhere where you have an internet connection. However, Plex Live TV streaming is currently limited to those with an NVIDIA SHIELD TV, Android TV or iOS device; although Plex says that support for other platforms will be added shortly. And you will of course need to keep your Plex server running at all times in order to access live TV from anywhere.

“Plex has always been about serving up the best possible media experience in one beautiful interface, no matter where you are and what device you’re using. We want to put all of your favorite content right at your fingertips whenever you’re ready to enjoy it,” said Keith Valory, CEO of Plex. “Now our Plex Pass users can enjoy free live and recorded TV with local news and sports at no extra cost, and without having to purchase yet another service.”

With more and more people cutting the cord in order to save money, solutions like those offered by Plex are becoming increasingly more attractive. Research firm GfK recently revealed that 25 percent of American households don’t subscribe to traditional pay-TV services
