Quake Champions Announced For PC-Only, Welcomes Newbie And Veteran eSports Warriors

Quake is back and ready to rumble. id Software’s new multiplayer shooter was featured at Bethesda's E3 2016 showcase. Tim Willits, Studio Director of id Software stated, “20 years ago, Quake set new standards for multiplayer competition and pushed the boundaries for graphics and gameplay. It’s important to all of us at id Software that Quake Champions remains true to the Quake legacy, and delivers the speed and gameplay our longtime fans expect, while also pressing forward by introducing new gameplay opportunities with new Champions and abilities.”

Quake Champions is being pitched as a eSports game. Bethesda promises that there will be a Quake Champions tournament at QuakeCon, August 4th-7th in Dallas, Texas. The game will feature a roster of new characters with their own distinctive abilities and strengths. On the downside, Quake Champions will only be available on PC. This allows Bethesda to do some unprecedented things with the id Tech 6 engine.The game will run on 120 hertz with unlocked frame rates. Some computers will be able to reach the 60 frames per second benchmark.


Quake was a first-person shooter video game, developed by id Software and published by GT Interactive in 1996. It was the successor to id software’s Doom series. Quake, however, offered full real-time 3D rendering and had early support for 3D acceleration through OpenGL. It was one of the first games with several multiplayer options. Quake received largely positive reviews at the time and continues to have an active fan base.

Quake is not the only id Software 90’s game making a comeback. The latest Doom was recently released on May 13th, 2016. It also received mostly positive reviews. On May 31, 2016, the game's sales were reported to have reached 500,000 copies sold for PC’s. It was the second best-selling video game in the United States during the week of its release.
