We've heard rumors for months, but Qualcomm today made it official. The Snapdragon 845 will be the flagship SoC used in next year's top Android smartphones. More specially, it's being called the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, fitting in with Qualcomm's currently nomenclature for its SoCs.

At this time, we don't know much with regards to specifics for the Snapdragon 845, but it has been confirmed that it will still be manufactured on a 10nm FinFET process -- like its Snapdragon 835 predecessor -- and it will incorporate the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem for gigabit-class internet connectivity. Samsung Foundry will be producing the chip alongside Samsung's Exynos 9810.

When it comes to everything else surrounding the Snapdragon 845, Qualcomm rattled off the following bullet points on what it looks to achieve with its new SoC:

  • Create amazing content and share
  • Lose yourself and be in another world
  • Ease your life with AI
  • Vault-like security
  • Globalizing the wireless fiber experience
  • More powerful experiences, longer lasting mobile experiences

The first products using the Snapdragon 845 will be high-end smartphones around mid-2018 (Xiaomi has already announced that its next flagship smartphone will feature the SoC). Given today's earlier announcement of Snapdragon 835-based PCs running Windows 10, we can also expect to see ultraportables with the processor sometime later in 2018 as well.

Stay tuned, as Qualcomm will reveal features and specs for the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform tomorrow.
