Qualcomm Brandishes Snapdragon 820A For Cars, Audi Chooses Snapdragon 602A For 2017 Vehicles

Qualcomm showed up at CES armed with a number of announcements. Some of the highlights include a new smartphone that utilizes the Snapdragon 820 processor from Letv, the Snapdragon 820 Automotive Family with Zeroth machine intelligence, and Audi’s selection of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 602A processors for its 2017 vehicles.

Letv will be the world’s first tech company to use the Snapdragon 820 processor in its next generation of smartphone devices. The first phone to use this processor will be the Le Max Pro. This new smartphone will feature Snapdragon Sense ID fingerprint technology with the new liveness detection capability that is designed to detect an actual finger is being used for authentication. The Le Max Pro will also feature 802.11ad wireless for multi-gigabit speeds and Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology. We had a chance to check this phone out in person. For connected cars, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 820 Automotive Family with Integrated LTE Modem and Machine Intelligence. Qualcomm is taking a modular approach with the Snapdragon 820A, thereby enabling a vehicle’s infotainment system to be upgradeable through hardware and software updates. Qualcomm’s Zeroth machine intelligence platform is present in this family. The Zeroth initiative will give automakers the ability to create deep learning-based solutions using neural networks for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and in-vehicle infotainment scenarios. A Zeroth-powered development kit will be available. Included in the Snapdragon 820A family is the Snapdragon 820Am which offers an integrated X12 LTE modem that is capable of 600 Mbps download and 150 Mbps upload speeds. Automotive samples of the 820A family are expected to be available in the first quarter of this year.

Audi has selected the Qualcomm Snapdragon 602A processors for use in its line of 2017 vehicles. This infotainment chipset is designed to offer advanced smartphone connectivity, infotainment, navigation, voice quality, and control features. The 602A features a quad-core Qualcomm Krait CPU, Qualcomm Adreno 320 GPU, Qualcomm Hexagon DSP, integrated GNSS baseband processing, and high-performance audio, video and communication cores. For a fully connected experience, this processor pairs with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MDM modem roadmap. The Snapdragon 602A was announced at CES in January 2014.
