Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 Takes Your Battery From 0 to 80 in 35 Minutes
Qualcomm is promising faster phone charges by way of Quick Charge 3.0, the next generation of its fast charging technology. What's different about Quick Charger 3.0 versus the first two iterations is the ability to employ something called Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage (INOV).
In plain English, INOV is an algorithm that allows portable devices to determine the exact power level needed for optimal power transfer at any point in time rather than rely on a predetermined voltage limit across the board. It also supports wider voltage options -- a mobile device can dynamically adjust the ideal voltage level supported by that specific device from 3.6V to 20V in 200mV increments. It essentially gives your phone dozens of power levels to choose from.
What all this fancy technology translates to is the ability to charge a "typical phone" from empty to 80 percent in about 35 minutes. Without Quick Charge 3.0, the same device would take nearly an hour and a half (90 minutes) to reach the same charge level.
"We are significantly enhancing the capabilities and benefits offered by Quick Charge 3.0 to bring robust fast charging technology to all," said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. "Quick Charge 3.0 addresses a primary consumer challenge with today’s mobile devices in helping users restore battery life quickly and efficiently, and does so through leading technology and a robust ecosystem including leading device and accessory OEMs."
Quick Charge 3.0 technology is available now and will be an option on select Snapdragon processors, including Snapdragon 820, 620, 618, 617, and 430. Qualcomm expects Quick Charge 3.0 to be a feature in mobile devices that appear in the market next year.
