Red Dead Redemption GTA V Mod Canceled Following Take Two Intervention
Part of the reason why PC gaming continues to thrive is because of mods. Fans of franchises have proven themselves to be highly creative individuals with a penchant for creating fun mods, but unfortunately it can be a sticky situation when legal red tape is involved. That is the case facing a promising Red Dead Redemption for Grand Theft Auto V. After Take-Two Interactive caught wind of the project, it sent out a cease and desist order and shut things down.
"I know this is a hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted," a modder who goes by the name Mr. Leisurewear stated on GTAForums.com. "And we sadly have to say we are stopping this project. So thanks guys, we were all so happy to see this, but it isn't going to happen, sorry."
The disappointing news comes not long after Mr. Leisurewear released a trailer for his team's mod. It has since been yanked from YouTube, undoubtedly also at the insistence of Take-Two Interactive, which holds the rights to the Red Dead Redemption franchise.
In a followup post, Mr. Leisurewear indicated "this was never going to be a PC port," but just the map.
"Undertaking this sort of a project with additional content ported over was never feasible , we were only gonna get a way to convert the map with both legal copies of each game, and some custom scripted additional content— there was never any intention or mention to either port a story mode over from RDR to V," Mr. Leisurewear added.
In response to another forum member encouraging Mr. Leisurewear to not throw away his files, he responded that he would never discard "3 years of work," saying that would be "insane." However, he'll have to be careful with those files to avoid a lawsuit. He confirmed that Take-Two Interactive has ordered him not to release anything.
While this is unfortunately, it is not wholly unexpected. Publishers and developers have been known to closely guard their IP, and it is not uncommon for companies to shut down fan made recreations and certain mods.
