Reggie Fils-Aime: Nintendo Switch Is Setting New Sales Records Every Day In U.S.
Evel Knievel didn't rise to notoriety by playing it safe; he took risks, and pretty big ones at that. By that same token, Nintendo was in need of a win after its Wii U failed to generate the same kind of buzz and sales of its Wii console, and so it took a risk with the Switch, a hybrid console built for gaming in the living and gaming on the go. So far it appears that risk is paying off—according to Nintendo president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime, the Switch is setting sales records in the United States on a daily basis.
"The reaction to Nintendo Switch has been remarkable. Every day we’re setting new records from a U.S. perspective, meaning, you know, today I can look back and see how I compare to the launch of the Wii or the Nintendo DS or the Nintendo 3DS, and I’m setting sales records every day with the Nintendo Switch," the Nintendo boss told Fox News.
Reggie Fils-Aime said earlier this month that the Switch notched more sales during its first two days of availability than any other console did in the same time frame in Nintendo's history. That includes the hugely popular Wii, which previously held the record for most sales during the first two days on the market. Talk about a remarkable feat, along with vindication that the Switch's dual-purpose design was the right way to go.
"The reaction has been fantastic. Consumers want it, I’ve been with industry peers, they’re excited with what we’re doing and helping to drive the industry. I’ve seen the games, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, right now the fourth highest-rated game in the history of video games," Fils-Aime added. "We’ve turned the industry on its ear and to do that, to be part of a company that has a reputation for doing it on a regular basis, has been tremendous."
Indeed Fils-Aime is right about turning the industry on its ear. There was plenty of skepticism leading up the Switch's launch, and to be fair there was optimism too. So far the latter has been validated by the early sales numbers. Unofficially, Nintendo sold more than 1.5 million Switch consoles during its first two weeks on the market. It's an incredibly hard to find game system—GameStop expects supply to fall short of demand throughout the rest of the year.
Is it worth the hype? We managed to snag a Switch console at Toys R Us this past weekend and will have a full review once we've spent some time playing it. Yes folks, toiling away playing video games is just the kind of sacrifice we're willing to make, so stay tuned!
