Rockstar Stepping Out With First Person Shooter Mode For GTA V

In a couple of weeks, Grand Theft Auto V will be released again for the current generation of consoles, though PC gamers will have to wait a bit longer. However, Rockstar Games is shaking things up by allowing gamers to play the third-person action-adventure game in first person.

This marks the first time that a Grand Theft Auto game has officially implemented a first-person mode (there have been mods prior to this for older games). “It’s a very intense, in-your-face experience… literally,” said GTA V animation director Rob Nelson to IGN. “Obviously, we felt like one of the most compelling things you could do to make an experience people have had before feel different was the new first-person mode.”

According to Rockstar, it had to make a variety of changes to accommodate the new perspective such as an optional first-person cover system, targeting system, a traditional FPS control scheme, and also the integration of new animations into the game. In regards to weapons alone, Nelson said that the team “created 3,000 animations on weapons alone” which included such things as muzzle flashes and even the direction which spent shell casings were ejected.

Nelson went on to say that, while the developer had always been interested in developing a first-person mode for previous games, it just wasn’t feasible saying, “I don’t think we could’ve put it in the [last-gen version] because we were too busy making the game. We were too busy working on our third-person controls and the missions.”

Grand Theft Auto V will be released November 18 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One while the PC version is expected to be out January 27, 2015.
