RootMetrics Rates Verizon Most Reliable Network, AT&T The Fastest

The marketing team at Verizon Wireless has tried to hammer home that Big Red's network is the most reliable in the nation, and now they have a study to lean on when making that claim. RootMetrics, a company that specializes in mapping out wireless coverage (you might also know the firm by Root Wireless), conducted a national study of network performance and found Verizon to be ahead of its peers in reliability.

Verizon almost swept the competition for the top spot in a series of performance evaluations, conceding a first place finish only once. In the Speed Index category, AT&T came out on top with a score 88.7 out of 100, which was enough to eke out a win over Verizon in second place with a score 88.5. T-Mobile came in third with a score 74.3 and Sprint trailed them all with a score 65.8.

The RootMetrics testing methodology consists of mobile network performance tests from a consumer's point of view. They're performed at the national, state, metro, and airport levels, and then summarized in a series of graphs from different categories. Verizon came out on top of all three performance categories (Data, Call, and Text), and also took the Overall Performance crown. The company was quick to brag after the results were announced.

"What’s most important is that our customers have access to a consistently reliable wireless experience when and where they want it," said Nicola Palmer, Chief Technology Officer of Verizon Wireless. "The most recent RootMetrics report confirms we are meeting and exceeding our throughput brand promise of 5 to 12 Mbps on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink across our footprint, which covers more than 500 markets and 97 percent of the U.S. population."

RootMetrics should also get an award for the amount of work that went into its tests. The company says it drove 217,758 miles and visited 6,356 indoor locations across 125 markets.
