Rose Gold (Pink) To Help Drive Record Opening-Weekend Sales For Apple iPhone 6S

Apple's decision to add a "Rose Gold" color option to its iPhone line is proving to be a good one. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus became available to the masses on Friday, and in what's becoming a familiar refrain, Apple is expecting its new flagship devices will set a weekend sales record.

Long lines formed at various Apple store locations around the world, though it's not the same kind of scene it once was thanks to the ability to pre-order iPhone models online. How iPhone buyers get their devices isn't what's important, what's notable is that Apple continues to see rabid demand for its smartphones.

Apple will likely announce weekend sales for its iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus on Monday. In the meantime, Apple has said that pre-order sales suggest this will be the biggest weekend ever in the history of the iPhone. Analysts expect Apple to announce 12 to 13 million first-weekend iPhone sales, up from more than 10 million sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last year.

The new iPhone models sport several upgrades, including an improved camera with "Live Photo" capabilities, an upgraded SoC, and a screen feature Apple calls "3D Touch" (essentially "Force Touch" for the iPhone).

These are all well and good, but it's the introduction of a pink (rose gold) color option that seems to have caught the attention of iPhone buyers. Based on conversations with buyers, an analyst with FBR Capital Markets estimates the rose gold color option accounted for over a third of in-store sales so far, Reuters reports. This is the first time Apple has offered this kind of hue on a flagship iPhone.
