Rovio Strikes Casual Gaming Gold Again with “Amazing Alex”, Tops App Store Charts

After spending so much time making the monster casual gaming hit Angry Birds and its several variants, developer Rovio was probably glad to have a new project to work on; the dev team is certainly even more delighted to see that a non-Angry Birds game could be a hit for the company.

“Amazing Alex”, Rovio’s new baby, launched on Thursday and has already shot to the top of the App Store’s charts where it took the number one spot in the paid apps area. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the game has even a fraction of the staying power of Angry Birds--but even if it doesn’t it could reasonably qualify as a hit.

For its part, Amazing Alex looks like a fun Rube Goldberg-esque game where you must use items around your room to act upon other items to achieve a goal across 100 levels. Users can also create and share their own levels, which is an interesting wrinkle. (What’s the appeal? Ask anyone who played Mouse Trap growing up.)

Now if you’ll excuse us, it’s high time we downloaded the app and got instantly addicted.
