Rumor: Samsung's Galaxy Gear Smartwatch Is Nigh
Pretty much everybody is working on a smartwatch these days--no seriously, it’s a veritable smartwatch jamboree out there--and although some have already become a Real Thing, such as the Pebble smartwatch and Sony’s SmartWatch2 (pictured), most are still under development.
However, according to Bloomberg’s multiple sources, Samsung is planning to announce its smartwatch on September 4th, ahead of IFA in Berlin. The device will be called the Samsung Galaxy Gear and will run the Android operating system.

Ostensibly, the Galaxy Gear will allow users to browse the Internet, make phone calls, and use email; thus, it seems that it may act as a standalone device as opposed to simply being a second screen companion to smartphones. (Perhaps it will serve both roles.)
There’s a two-headed problem that all these tech companies need to overcome in order to claim the smartwatch crown. First, they need to hit the market before the competition, although that strategy has only been so successful for the likes of Pebble and Sony; second, they need to crack the smartwatch nut like Steve Jobs did with the smartphone.

When Apple first released the iPhone, it was a product that seemed to get everything right about what a smartphone could and should be. It was so superb that people genuinely felt that they needed one. One of these competitors needs to do the same with the smartwatch, or else the market will be flooded with relatively expensive, not-so-compelling copycat products.
Whoever figures it out first can take our money.
