Samsung Announces Exynos 9810 10nm SoC With 1.2Gbps LTE Modem And New GPU

Samsung has quietly announced a new flagship mobile system-on-chip, the Exynos 9810. The South Korean electronics giant brought up the new chip almost as an aside, wedging it into a long press release that is primarily focused on bragging about racking up a few dozen CES 2018 Innovation Awards, including awards for Fitness, Sports, and Biotech for the Gear Sport, Gear Fit2 Pro, and Gear IconX.

It is the first time that Samsung has won Innovation Awards in those particular categories, and while that is neat and all, we are more interested in the Exynos 9810 system-on-chip (SoC), which will undoubtedly find its way into international version of the Galaxy S9 (Samsung typically sticks with Qualcomm hardware for the US version of its flagship Galaxy phones, and we doubt that will change with the next iteration).

Samsung Exynos 9810

Unfortunately Samsung did not share many details about its new chip, though it did cover some of the basics. The Exynos 9810 will be built on a 2nd generation 10-nanometer manufacturing process and feature 3rd generation custom CPU cores. it will also have an upgraded GPU to keep up with increasingly demanding graphics performance on mobile devices, and a gigabit LTE model with Category 18 6CA support, an industry first.

In regards to the graphics, the previous Exynos chipset used an ARM Mali-G71 GPU, so we suspect the Exynos 9810 will have a Mali-G72 GPU. The Mali-G72 is the second generation Bitfrost-based GPU for high performance products, and specifically high fidelity mobile gaming and virtual reality. Compared to the previous generation Bitfrost GPU, ARM says its Mali-G71 GPU provides 25 percent higher efficiency, 20 percent better performance density, and 40 percent greater overall performance.

We will likely have to wait for CES 2018 in January of next year for Samsung to reveal the full specs of the Exynos 9810. It will be interesting to see how it compares to Qualcomm's upcoming flagship Snapdragon 845.
