Samsung Launches Water Resistant Galaxy A Phones With USB-C, NFC And 16MP Cameras

Samsung is refreshing its Galaxy A family with some useful new features that were once reserved for the flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. In addition, the new Galaxy A3, A5 and A7 all will come equipped with a metal frame and 3D glass to give them a more premium appearance and feel.

The “runt” of the litter is the Galaxy A3, which features a 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, 1.6GHz octa-core processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. An included microSD slot boosts on-device storage up to 256GB. On the camera side of things, you’ll find a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera. Powering the device is a 2350 mAh battery.

The unruly “middle child” status belongs to the Galaxy A5, which brings a 5.2-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display to the table. The octa-core SoC’s clock speed is boosted slightly to 1.9GHz and RAM is increased from 2GB to 3GB. Internal storage doubles to 32GB and there is a microSD slot for added expansion capabilities. The Galaxy A5 gets a camera system upgrade, offering customers 16MP sensors for both the rear- and front-facing cameras. Given the larger footprint of the Galaxy A5, battery capacity increases to an even 3,000 mAh and Fast Charging is supported.

The overachieving sibling of the family is of course the Galaxy A7. Its specs match that of the Galaxy A5, but includes an even larger 5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display and a 3,600 mAh battery with Fast Charging support.

All of the new members of the Galaxy A family include fingerprint sensors, NFC tech with Samsung Pay support, Bluetooth 4.2, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, USB-C ports and IP68 dust/water resistance. Surprisingly, Samsung will ship these brand new smartphones with Android 6.0.16 Marshmallow despite the fact that Android 7.0 Nougat has been available since late August 2016.

“At Samsung, we are always trying to ensure our customers have the most advanced products on the market,” said DJ Koh, Samsung Electronics President of Mobile Communications Business. “The latest Galaxy A series is a testament to this. We integrated our unique approach to design as well as the features Galaxy customers have come to love to provide added performance without compromising on style.”

The Galaxy A3, A5 and A7 will first launch early this month in Russia, with global availability shortly after. Pricing is not currently available at this time.
