Samsung Makes 4.5-Inch Galaxy S5 mini Official

The oft-rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is now official. Samsung posted a press release today announcing the smaller version of its flagship Galaxy S5, a 4.5-inch HD Super AMOLED (1280x720) device that’s dwarfed a bit by its 5.1-inch big brother.

This handset has the same design as the full-size S5, including the perforated back and soft grip. It’s powered by a “Quad Core 1.4GHz” processor (that is presumed to be the Samsung Exynos 3470 SoC), and it has 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, and runs Android 4.4 (KitKat).

The rear camera is 8MP with autofocus and LED flash, and the front camera offers 1.2MP (FHD). Additional features include S Health, a private/kids mode, and Ultra Power Savings mode, and IP67 dust and water resistance.

For connectivity, there’s WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS + GLONASS, and an IR blaster. Sensors include an accelerometer, a digital compass, gyroscope, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, fingerprint reader, and a heart rate monitor.

It’s coming soon--to Russia, anyway. Samsung says it will come to Russia in early July and will roll out to the global market thereafter.
