Samsung Readies Version of Galaxy S4 with Faster Downloads

It's getting to be a little tough keeping up with all of Samsung's Galaxy devices, even those among the same family. To wit, there's there's the Galaxy S4 (Samsung's flagship smartphone), Galaxy S4 mini (a phone for budget shoppers), Galaxy S4 Active (a rugged smartphone), and Galaxy S4 zoom (hybrid camera/smartphone) -- phew! Soon you'll be able to add to the growing list of Galaxy S4 devices a new model smartphone with faster download speeds.

Samsung's working on a special version of the Galaxy S4 that will use LTE-Advanced 4G technology. The big benefit of LTE-Advanced is that it offers data transmission speeds that are up to twice as fast as traditional 4G LTE. As Samsung explains it, a movie download that takes 3 minutes to complete on 4G LTE would take a little more than 1 minute on LTE-Advanced.

"We'll be the first with the commercial launch of the advanced 4G version of the smartphone," J.K. Shin, co-chief executive of Samsung, told Reuters in an interview. Shin added that the phone will be sold in South Korea perhaps as early as this month.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. recently cut its profit estimates for Samsung after it noticed a slowdown in Galaxy S4 sales. Investors responded by dumping stock, dropping Samsung's share price by more than 6 percent and shaving $12 billion from the company's valuation. While Shin wouldn't share any updated S4 sales forecasts, he did tell Reuters that "S4 sales remain strong," adding that he expects the new the upcoming LTE-Advanced phone will be yet another Galaxy product that will "ensure healthy profit margins."
