Scottsdale, AZ To See First Microsoft Retail Store

Microsoft has previously said that the Microsoft Retail Stores would open this fall, but been rather vague about the whole project. We knew of a Paris-based Windows "Cafe" that is opening on Oct. 22nd (Windows 7 D-Day), and that Microsoft was hiring away Apple Retail Store managers. Now we know of at least one retail site that's opening on Oct. 22nd: Scottsdale, AZ.

According to the ads in the Arizona Republic newspaper, the grand opening of the Microsoft Store takes place at Scottsdale Fashion Square in Scottsdale, AZ, at 10 AM on October 22. Ads also mention that at 5 PM in the afternoon, pop superstar (?) Ashley Tisdale will appear.

For those unclear of just who this pop superstar is, Ashley Tisdale is really best known for appear in the Disney TV series "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" as well as the "High School Musical" movies. She also made news when she had a rhinoplasty operation, but at least that didn't change her superstar singing voice.

At any rate, Microsoft is reportedly giving away gift bags to the first 1000 visitors, as well as concert tickets, though its unclear what concert the tickets are for. One would hope they are not simply for the Ashley Tisdale concert.

It will be interesting to watch and see how the Microsoft Retail Store idea pans out.  Unlike Apple, they don't make their own PCs, or their own smartphones, so it's still unclear how things will settle in.

And with the Windows Vista disappointment still a recent memory, Microsoft desperately needs Windows 7 to be a hit.  The Retail Stores need to work, too, as a means of making the company seem cooler, but Windows 7 needs to be a success first.
