Sexy Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Goes Topless, Charges $63,900 For Wild Ride

Here are HotHardware, we love sexy sports cars — in fact, they are the epitome of “Hot Hardware.” These epic machines are loaded to the gills with potent engines, slick shifting transmissions, and enough tech to keep even the most ham-fisted driver from making a fool out of himself (or herself).

Today, we’ve gotten word that one of our favorite drop dead gorgeous (and incredibly lightweight) sports cars is dropping its top. Although the 4C Spider officially debuted at the Detroit Auto Show in January, Alfa Romeo has finally made it known how much American buyers will have to fork over to get their butts into the tight-fitting seats: $63,900 (plus an additional $1,595 destination fee). The hardtop 4C, which was introduced in the U.S. last summer, has a base MSRP of $53,900.

The 4C Spider invites open-top motoring with its removable targa roof. With the top off, the 4C Spider is just as good looking as its closed roof sibling, but it does lose the swanky glass panel that covers the mid-mounted four-cylinder engine. Speaking of the engine, the 4C Spider retains the same turbocharged engine that generates 237hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque and six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. But before you balk at what is seemingly a piddling amount of power (heck, a Toyota Camry V6 puts out 268hp), realize that the carbon fiber-intensive 4C Spider only weighs 2,487 pounds — just 22 pounds heavier than the fixed roof 4C.

The minimal increase in weight means that the 4C Spider still accelerates to 60 mph in the same 4.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 160 mph.

Besides the $10,000 price premium over its fixed roof counterpart, there’s one other downside to choosing the 4C Spider — its fabric roof that seals the vehicle when you don’t want want rain ruining your interior or cold air whipping through your thinning hair. With the top in place, the 4C Spider looks like a 4C with a bad toupee on its head. On the plus side, the fabric roof can be stowed away in the trunk when it’s not in use.

The Italian made Alfa Romeo 4C Spider rolls into dealerships this summer.
