Doom Gets 25th Anniversary Mod With 18 New Levels Created By John Romero

If you are a fan of the original 1993 game Doom, you are in for a treat with Romero Games offering up a new expansion for the original game to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The game is called SIGIL, and John Romero says that the game is a free megawad that contains nine single-player levels and nine deathmatch levels with music by metal guitarist Buckethead. The megawad will launch in mid-February and requires that you have the original 1993 registered version of Doom to play, not the newer 2016 version of Doom for Switch and other platforms.

Before you panic -- if you lost your original Doom floppies from way back in 1994 -- the original DOOM is available on Steam. Romero calls SIGIL a spiritual successor to the fourth episode of Doom and it picks up exactly where the original left off. Romero has teamed up with Limited Run Games to create two limited edition fan boxes that include a CD with game music from Buckethead, including a custom song written specifically for SIGIL. The boxed games also include cover art by Christopher Lovell. The only way to get the exclusive cover art and Buckethead's music is to buy the boxed versions. The SIGIL Beast Box costs $166, and the Standard Edition box costs $39.99.

A limited number of the boxes will be produced; the exact number remains a mystery. The game was created using Doom Builder 2 by Pascal vd Heiden, and Romero points out that fans can use Doom Builder 2 to make their own levels. Romero fans will be thrilled to hear that he also confirmed something else is in the works with no specific details stating, "...it will be done when it’s done."

As for what you can expect of SIGIL, Romero says, "After killing the Spiderdemon at the end of E4M8 (Unto the Cruel), your next stop is Earth — you must save it from hellspawn that is causing unimaginable carnage. But Baphomet glitched the final teleporter with his hidden sigil whose eldritch power brings you to even darker shores of Hell. You fight through this stygian pocket of evil to confront the ultimate harbingers of Satan, then finally return to become Earth’s savior. In summary, rip and tear!"
