‘Simpler, Faster’ Google Hangouts 4.0 For Android Receives Material Design Makeover

Google has gone and revamped its Hangouts app for Android. It has a fresh new look courtesy of Google's Material Design, along with improved speed and new feature additions to make the experience easier to navigate and better than before. The end result is Hangouts 4.0, a new version that's rolling out to Android devices today.

It was only a matter of time before Google took a fresh coat of paint and changed things up. Google's Material Design aesthetic that was introduced with Android 5.0 Lollipop has already been applied to NVIDIA's Shield Hub and, a little more recently, Chrome OS. Apparently Hangouts was next in line.

The updated version sports a new look and feel with items that respond to your touch in more intuitive ways, Google says. Transitions between tasks are meant to be more fluid with the Material Design. There's also a new Compose button that makes it easier to start a new group or conversation, along with a streamlined contacts list and revamped attachments.

Behind the scenes, Google says it's been "obsessively fixing bugs" and optimizing code to speed up message delivery. Hangouts 4.0 is both faster and more reliable than previous builds, and as a bonus, it consumes less battery power too, according to Google.

Hangouts 4.0 is already rolling out to Android users today. It's also available in the Play Store. As for iOS users, Google says they recently received many of the same updates.
