Slingbox 350 And 500 Place-Shifting Boxes Officially Launched
There's a new Slingbox. Believe it? You better. After almost four years, Sling Media has finally introduced two new pieces of hardware this week. The Slingbox 350 and 500 are the new boxes on the block, with the 500 being the one to snag for those who need Wi-Fi built right in. The company's prior boxes required a direct hardwire Ethernet connection, and even the new 350 strangely omits inbuilt Wi-Fi. But, there's a definite boost in quality. Each one can place-shift content in 1080p, streaming whatever is on your TV set back home and enabling you to control DVR functions remotely. The 500 also includes HDMI, a first for a Slingbox.
In conjunction with the introduction of these two new Slingbox products, Sling Media is also rolling out new SlingPlayer software clients across its desktop and mobile platforms. In addition, SlingPlayer software for iOS, Android and Windows Phone is now on sale for $14.99/ The 350 and 500 will ship in the U.S. on October 14, and will be available in Canada in November. Both models can be purchased at www.slingbox.com, Best Buy (online and in stores), Amazon.com and other independent retailers. In the U.S., Slingbox 500 is $299.99 MSRP and Slingbox 350 is $179.99 MSRP.
That's still super pricey compared to the competition, and the fact that the apps cost extra is a bit of a bummer. There really aren't too many nice extras on these given the four year wait, but at least Sling's back on the trail to making new hardware. Hopefully we'll see even more soon.
