Sony CEO: Worldwide PS Vita Sales Top 1.8 Million
Sony President and Chief Executive Officer, Kaz Hirai, revealed during a conference call this week that his company has shipped 1.8 million PS Vita consoles up through the end of March. Looking ahead, Hirai expects to sell an additional 10 million units by the end of March in 2013, a bold prediction given the console's past performance.
"About Vita, the last year, [we sold] 1.8 million units in the U.S., Japan, Asia, and Europe. And as a starting phase, I think it was a good start," Hirai said via a translator, according to Eurogamer.net.
That amounts to about 600,000 PS Vita sales a month since it was introduced, and at that pace, it would impossible to sell 10 million units by this time next year. However, Hirai's banking on upcoming software titles turning the tide.
"A game platform, like Vita -- the software is the key to success, how good the software is. We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business, that is the basic line," Hirai said.
