The PlayStation ecosystem is in a good place right now. It has more than 70 million monthly active users worldwide, with Sony's PlayStation Plus program sitting at 26.4 million paid subscribers strong. According to Sony, active PS4 users spend more than 600 million hours in total per week on its gaming platform. And as far as Sony is concerned, the PS4 platform is in its prime as the company looks ahead to more exclusive games, partner titles, and VR gaming.
"We are committed to further expanding our overall PS4 ecosystem, by broadening the PlayStation VR content portfolio, as well as enriching our network services along with our ground-breaking software lineup. We remain steadfast in bringing the best entertainment experience to users worldwide and making PS4 the best place to play," said Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
In regards to VR, Sony officially entered the space with its VR headset last year. As of last week, Sony said it has sold over 1 million VR headsets, a modest sum but one that Sony will look to build upon going forward.
Sony is also pushing 4K, in particular with its PlayStation 4 Pro console. However, it will face stiff competition in the 4K arena from Microsoft and its forthcoming Xbox One X console. Previously known as Project Scorpio, the Xbox One X brings upgraded specs to the 4K gaming space and more raw power to the scene compared to the PlayStation 4 Pro. Where the PS4 Pro has an advantage is that it costs $100 less than the proposed MSRP of Microsoft's beefed up console.
