Sony PlayStation 4 Pro Media Player Gains 4K Video Support
Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro Media Player is getting an upgrade thanks to the ability to support 4K video playback. Users will be able to save 4K videos on a USB stick or home server that can be played via the Media Player App.
Users will of course need a 4K television to watch the videos in 4K and will also need a USB drive that has already been formatted as extended storage for the PS4. PS4 Pro owners can also, of course, watch 4K content from streaming apps such as Netflix and YouTube.
The Media Player update will also support 4K VR video content for those that own a Playstation VR. 4K VR videos will boast higher image quality compared to HD VR videos. According to Sony, users will be able to “Capture stunning 360 degree 4K footage, and then immerse yourself in that footage in VR at home – just as if you’re right back in the scene you shot.”
Sony released the PlayStation 4 Pro this past November and while the device is not a new generation console, it contains a number of hardware upgrades (including a beefier CPU and GPU). The PS4 Pro is able to support 4K gameplay and High Dynamic Range (HDR) visuals. The PS4 Pro also easily supports all previous PS4 content, although it doesn't support UHD Blu-ray discs.
The PS4 Pro has received a number of software upgrades since its release. Sony recently released their System Software Update 4.50 that included “Boost Mode”. Boost Mode increases performance for “legacy” games that were not initially optimized to take advantage of PS4 Pro hardware.
The PS4 Pro Media Player App update will be available on Tuesday, March 28th.
