Sony PlayStation 4 Sales Top 18.5 Million Worldwide

Console gamers continue to flock to Sony's popular PlayStation 4 console with sales to date topping 18.5 million units, the Japanese company announced today. During the holiday season, various sales and promotions helped the PS4 notch more than 4.1 million unit sales globally en route to becoming the fastest selling PlayStation hardware of all time.

Microsoft has yet to release current sales figures that take into account the holiday shopping period, but barring any surprises, it's likely the PS4 will still come out slightly ahead. That's been the trend in the current generation console wars, save for November of last year when NPD Group said the Xbox One outsold the PS4 for the month. However, cumulative sales at that time still favored Sony's hardware, with the PS4 sitting at 13.5 million unit sales and the Xbox One at 10 million unit sales.

Sony also revealed that its PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) membership has grown to over 10.9 million users as of January 2, 2015. And as for software sales, strong support from third party developers has led to over 81.8 million copies sold in retail stores globally and through digital downloads through January 4, 2015, including 17.8 million sold during the holiday season.

"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as their console of choice throughout this holiday season," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We will continue to reinforce and deliver additional value on PS4 as the best place to play, by bringing even more exciting content and by enriching our wide array of service offerings."

PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary

While an insignificant tally in the grand scheme of things, Sony was able to add 12,300 PS4 sales to its global total -- that's the number of limited edition gray color PS4 consoles it released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the PlayStation brand.
