Sony PlayStation Vita Sales Top 1.2 Million

It's never been a foregone conclusion that Sony's PlayStation Vita would be a success, and in fact there were/are several factors working against it. For one, the device's launch in the U.S. ended up being delayed, and while it was released on time in Japan, there were complaints of glitches that drummed up bad publicity for the handheld console. And let's not forget that increasingly powerful smartphones and the rise of tablet PCs both threaten the very idea of a dedicated handheld console. Despite it all, Sony has already sold around 1.2 million PS Vita consoles.

According to Forbes, Sony sold more than 620,000 PS Vita units in the U.S., Europe, and Australia since launching the device two weeks ago. Sony sold another 578,812 units in Japan dating back to last year. Add them together and you have around 1.2 million gamers getting their groove on with a PS Vita.

"The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., according to Forbes.

Equally impressive is the number of software titles that have been sold for the PS Vita, which total over 2 million games via retail and digital download combined. That's not a bad number, especially when there are just 25 games available (over 70 titles are being developed).
