Sony Sent Some PlayStation 4 Owners A Sweet VR Gaming Surprise

Astro Bot
Sony is apparently in the giving mood, as some PlayStation 4 owners on Reddit can attest. How so? Apparently the electronics company has given a away a bunch free copies of Astro Bot Rescue Mission to registered PS4 owners, with "no strings" attached. The reason why, however, is not immediately clear (though we have a theory).

"No catch, not strings... we're just giving you a free PlayStation VR game. Download the award-winning Astro Bot Rescue Mission... and blast off on an epic adventure to save Captain Astro's missing crew-bots. Use your exclusive voucher code at PlayStation Store now," the email reads.

What makes this surprise gift so nifty is not just that it's an out-of-the-blue freebie, but it's a desirable VR game. Astro Bot Rescue Mission currently enjoys a 90 rating on Metacritic among a round of professional reviews, and a high User Score of 8.9, based on 363 ratings.

"Damn, not just any free game, but possible THE BEST of the PSVR games. Seriously. Astrobot is so ridiculously good," a user on Reddit wrote.

So, why did Sony suddenly decide to give away a game? It's not clear how Sony chose which recipients would receive a download code, but if they went mostly (or exclusively) to non-PSVR owners, this could be a good way of enticing a purchase. The download codes are redeemable until December 2019, so Sony could be looking to bolster PSVR sales this holiday shopping season.

Either way, this is a nice surprise. If you own a PS4, be sure to check your email (including your spam folder) to see if you received a code as well.
