Here’s SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated Gameplay You Barnacle Head

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated
Developer Purple Lamp Studios and publisher TNQ Nordic are bringing everyone's favorite sponge to modern consoles. We are of course talking about SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Reydrated, and over the weekend at Gamecom, TNQ Nordic provided around 12 minutes of actual gameplay footage, giving us a slightly extended glimpse of how the remake will fare on today's hardware.

The original version came out in October 2003, debuting for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and Windows PCs. But just as Spyro somewhat recently saw a graphical overhaul by developer Toys for Bob and publisher Activision in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy release, SpongeBob is getting similar treatment by Purple Lamp Studios and TNQ Nordic.

We've known this since June, but at the time of the original announcement, there was no gameplay footage to digest. Now there is, in the form of a pre-alpha demo, and things are looking as colorful and playful as you might expect.

"Are you ready, kids? The cult classic is back, faithfully remade in spongetastic splendor! Play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy and show the evil Plankton that crime pays even less than Mr. Krabs. Want to save Bikini Bottom from lots of rampant robots? Of course you do! Want to underpants bungee jump? Why wouldn't you! Want to join forces in a brand new multiplayer mode? The battle is on!," TNQ Nordic said in June.

The final look is bound be more polished than the pre-alpha build. TNQ Nordic is promising high-end visuals, modern resolutions (hopefully that means at least 1080p, if not 1440p and even 4K, but we'll have to wait and see), and "carefully polished gameplay." The developer also notes there will be a brand new multiplayer horde mode for up to two players, online and offline.

In addition, the Reydrated release will include content that was cut from the original game, such as the Robo Squidward boss fight.

As for the 12 minutes of gameplay footage, it shows SpongeBob romping around Bikini Bottom en route to a battle with King Jellyfish. From our vantage point, things are shaping up nicely. There's still no release date, though there is a placeholder on Steam for the PC release. Rehydrated will also arrive on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
