Sprint CEO Claure’s Tirade Against T-Mobile Only Emboldens Legere’s Bravado
Sometimes it's better not to take the bait and get sucked into an Internet fight. Sprint boss Marcelo Claure is learning that the hard way after being drawn into battle with T-Mobile CEO John Legere on what can be considered his home field -- Twitter. If you're at all familiar with Legere, you know he loves to use Twitter to poke fun at rival wireless carriers, and he's turned himself into a bit of a rockstar using social media.
We already covered the details leading up to this point, but to quickly recap, Sprint recently announced a new "All-In" unlimited phone plan designed to simplify everything by offering an entire package -- phone lease and all -- for $80 per month. The advertisement for this plan featured former pro soccer player David Beckham visiting all four wireless major carriers and finding fault with all but Sprint. If that didn't get Legere's attention, then surely a Twitter post by Claure with Beckham standing in a T-Mobile store did, and then it was on.
"I give credit to Sprint for swinging the bat when they do, but All-In is a swing and a miss guys!! #SprintLikeHell," Legere tweeted.
After seeing the post, Claure erupted on Twitter with a series of posts blasting Legere and T-Mobile's Uncarrier branding.
"I am so tired of your Uncarrier bulls**t when you are worse than the other two carriers together," Claure stated in the first of four Twitter responses. "Your cheap misleading lease imitation is a joke. You trick people to believe that they have a 15 dollar iPhone lease payment when it's not true. You tell them they can upgrade up to three times but you don't tell them the price goes up to 27 dollars when they do. You say one thing but behave completely different. It's all a fake show. So it's really #TMobileLikeHell."
That's where we left off, and if you thought there's no way Legere would let Claure's tirade go unanswered, you were right. Legere responded with several tweets of his own while keeping his cool doing it.
"You mad bro?," Legere stated in his first of four Twitter posts aimed at Claure.
"When it comes to self-destructing, Marcelo is #Allin," reads the second. The fun is just getting started, folks.
"Think I hit a nerve at end of rough week? ;) Maybe end of the Q is a hard day over there. T-Mobile numbers speak for themselves. #comingsoon," Legere continued.
"Isn't it cute that Marcel's been following me on Twitter since joining? Now he's starting to sound like me to get attention -- it's working!," Legere concluded.
Things sure did turn ugly in a hurry! Barely a month ago, Claure wished Legere a happy birthday on Twitter, to which Legere thanked him saying "it means a lot to me." And let's not forget that Sprint and T-Mobile were going to merge with each other, only the regulatory hurdles proved too high to leap.
Will this be the end of their Twitter fight? Better refill that popcorn bucket just in case.
