Stalking Ex Got You Down After A Break-Up? Facebook To Make It Easier To Hide
Facebook is a great place for keeping in contact with long distance family and friends, posting pictures of an awesome meal, staying up to date with current events, and, if we're being totally honest, stalking ex lovers. Breaking up with a person in the social media era comes with an additional set of challenges that didn't exist before sites like Facebook, but thankfully Mark Zuckerberg and his team of engineers are taking steps to ensure that when relationships end, your privacy stays intact.
"Starting today, we are testing tools to help people manage how they interact with their former partners on Facebook after a relationship has ended. When people change their relationship status to indicate they are no longer in a relationship, they will be prompted to try these tools," Facebook states.
One of the things the new tools allow you to do after a breakup is see less of a former partner's name and profile picture around Facebook when they're tagged in posts. Maybe you and an ex decided to part ways but remain friends. That can be tough on both parties, but by configuring Facebook to show less of your ex, you can avoid being constantly reminded of a relationship gone bad without having to unfriend or block the other person.
You can also have Facebook limit the photos, videos, and status updates of yours that an ex is able to see. Facebook isn't calling it an anti-stalking tool, but that's essentially what it is. Even though you decided to remain friends with Mr. or Ms. Psycho Ex Lover, it doesn't mean you want him or her watching your every move.
"This work is part of our ongoing effort to develop resources for people who may be going through difficult moments in their lives. We hope these tools will help people end relationships on Facebook with greater ease, comfort and sense of control," Facebook says.
Facebook's rolling out these optional tools on mobile first to test them out and gather feedback.
