Star Trek Online Erects In-Game Leonard Nimoy Memorial

Developer Arc Games has decided to pay tribute to Leonard Nimoy by erecting three in-game memorials to the fallen actor in Star Trek Online, executive producer Stephen Ricossa announced. It’s a classy gesture to the man who spawned generations of fans through his character Spock, the pointy-eared half-Human/half-Vulcan.

One of the memorials is an in-game stone statute of Spock that replaces the central structure on the fountain on Vulcan. Underneath is the inscription, "Live Long and Prosper." The same statue will also be added to New Romulus, but with the inscription, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few," an homage to Spock's efforts of building toward Romulan and Vulcan reunification.

In addition to the statues, Arc Games will be hanging black flags of mourning in Earth Spacedock, Qo'noS, and New Romulus. And finally, the developer is also adding a memorial plaque to those same locations to honor Leonard Nimoy and others in the Star Trek family who have passed, including Majel Barrett (Number One, Nurse Christine Chapel, and other roles), James Doohan (Montgomery "Scotty" Scott), DeForest Kelley (Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy), and Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek creator and producer).

"People will be able to interact with this memorial and read the names, the dates of their birth and passing, and a personal quote where possible. In this small way, we hope to honor the memory and contribution of those who helped shape Star Trek into the cultural touchstone it is today," Ricossa said.

Nimoy passed away in his home last week at age 83. He died of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Just last year, Nimoy announced he was battling the disease, saying it came from years of smoking, which he had quit around 30 years ago.

Though best known for his portrayal of Spock, Nimoy was a man of many talents -- he was a writer, photographer, film director, singer, and more.
