Star Wars: The Force Awakens Makes Fastest Ever Light Speed Jump To Crack $1 Billion Barrier
The good news for other holiday releases is that Force Awakens isn't cannibalizing box office ticket sales as a whole. Daddy's Home, a comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, debuted to $38.8 million, while Joy and Concussion collected $17.5 million and $11 million, respectively.
That's also good news for upcoming flicks like Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, which grossed $4.5 million in a limited release in just 100 theaters.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens may go down as the highest grossing film of all time, though adjusting for inflation makes for interesting debate. Either way, Disney's decision to purchase Lucasflim and the rights to the Star Wars franchise for $4.05 billion is looking like a wise one.
