Star Wars: The Force Awakens Makes Fastest Ever Light Speed Jump To Crack $1 Billion Barrier

Not only is the Force strong with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so are box office ticket sales. The newest Star Wars flick kept the momentum going and pulled in an additional $153.5 million on its second weekend in theaters, pushing the overall tally to $1.09 billion. In doing so, Force Awakens became the fastest movie ever to hit the $1 billion mark.

That's just one of many records Force Awaken has broken. Its second weekend ticket sales total was also the most in the history of big screen movies, and with a domestic total of $544.6 million, it has a good chance of unseating Avatar as the highest grossing movie in the United States, a mark that sits at $749.8 million.

The good news for other holiday releases is that Force Awakens isn't cannibalizing box office ticket sales as a whole. Daddy's Home, a comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, debuted to $38.8 million, while Joy and Concussion collected $17.5 million and $11 million, respectively.

That's also good news for upcoming flicks like Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, which grossed $4.5 million in a limited release in just 100 theaters.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens J.J. Abrams

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may go down as the highest grossing film of all time, though adjusting for inflation makes for interesting debate. Either way, Disney's decision to purchase Lucasflim and the rights to the Star Wars franchise for $4.05 billion is looking like a wise one.
