Super Smash Brothers Passes Mario Kart 8 As Fastest Selling Wii U Game Ever In The U.S.

All it takes is one good game to turn fortunes around, and Nintendo hopes that Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U will be the one that does it. As it stands, Nintendo's brawler featuring iconic characters from the company's many successful franchises is already the fastest selling Wii U game in the U.S. in the console's history.

Super Smash Bros. powered through Mario Kart 8 to steal away pole position as the fastest selling Wii U title ever -- it's sold more than 490,000 physical and digital copies combined during its first three days on the market (November 21 through November 23).

"The Nintendo holiday is off to a great start, but there’s a lot of work left to do and a few more surprises in store for our fans," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "With great deals coming on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and great content like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launching next week, Nintendo will offer shoppers the best combination of fun and value this holiday season."

Super Smash Bros. is racking up solid reviews as well. It has a Metacritic score of 92, making it the second highest rated original game of this generation, and an average user score of 9.2. That makes it the eighth Wii U title to have a Metacritic score of 85 or higher and a user score of 8.5 or higher.

This is exactly what Nintendo needs as it builds on momentum from its fiscal second quarter and tries to compete with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which have sold 10 million units and 13.5 million units, respectively, around the world to date. The Wii is sitting at 7.29 million units sold.
