T-Mobile Expands Data Stash 'Rollover Data' To Include Prepaid Plans

T-Mobile turned more than a few heads during its Uncarrier 8.0 event that was held in late December. The wireless carrier announced a new take on the “rollover” plans by extending it your monthly data allotment (for postpaid accounts). Under T-Mobile’s Data Stash initiative, customers can rollover their unused data month-to-month and keep that amassed data pool for up to a year. T-Mobile even sweetened the deal by giving their customers a 10GB “Starter Stash” to kick things off.

Today, T-Mobile is extending Data Stash to its prepaid plans starting on March 22. Data Stash will be available to Simple Choice prepaid customers and the terms are pretty much identical to what was previously announced for postpaid customers. That means you still receive 10GB to start off with, and you’ll still be allowed to carryover your data for up to a year.

According to T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Andrew Sherrard, Data Stash is a huge differentiator for his company. “What I really want to say is that – while we’re busy growing Data Stash – the old guard carriers are busy running away from it,” sad Sherrard. “And that’s just baffling to me.”

Sherrard went on to add that customers have wanted such functionality and adds poignantly, “It’s the right thing to do.”

“So, why would the carriers ignore their customers AND fairness?  I mean … other than just bad habits?”

AT&T countered T-Mobile’s Data Stash in early January with its own program, but customers can only rollover data for 30 days. As for Verizon, competing in such promotions is simply beneath it. "We did not go to places where we did not financially want to go to save a customer," said Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo in late January. "We're a leader, not a follower.”
