Tesla Model S P100D Effortlessly Shreds 0-60 In 2.28 Seconds In Ludicrous Mode
The remarkable thing about Tesla's automobile lineup is not just that they're electric vehicles with fancy technologies such as Auto Pilot (self-driving mode), but that they remain sporty in performance. This is especially true of the 2017 Tesla Model S P100D. Initiating what Tesla calls Ludicrous Model, which puts added stress on the motor, gearbox, and battery for a performance boost, the Model S P100D was able to hit 0-60 miles per hour in less than 2.3 seconds.
The enthusiast drivers at Motor Trend took the 4,891-pound vehicle to the track where it posted the fastest 0-60 mph time of any production car in the world. Tesla now holds the record to beat, which is precisely 2.275507139 seconds. It was also able to hit 30 mph, 40 mph, and 50 mph from a standstill faster than any other production car on the planet following a recent software update by Tesla.
Ludicrous mode, indeed. Getting the best of supercars designed for raw performance is no small achievement, let alone for a battery powered car. Granted, supercars like the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1 pull ahead at higher speeds where horsepower trumps instant torque, but for puttering around town or coming off that red light turned green, there is not another production car in the world that can hang with the Tesla Model S P100D.
The closest competitor is the Porsche 918. It only lags the Model S P100D by 0.05 seconds going from 0-30 mph. They're about even at 0-40 mph as well, after which the Tesla is able to put a little more distance between itself and the Porsche from 60 mph through 90 mph. They both can finish the quarter mile in just 10.5 seconds, at which point the Porsche is traveling a little bit faster.
Existing Model S P100D owners who want to try to replicate the record run will need to find a safe place to do so, such as a closed track. They'll also need to download the latest firmware, v8.0 release 2.52.22. Finally, it requires Ludicrous mode, which is found in Settings > Acceleration. After pressing the Ludicrous button for five seconds, a warning message appears asking if you're sure you want to push the limits. There are two options: "No, I want my Mommy" and "Yes, bring it on!"
Selecting the former starts a preparation process that raises the battery temperature and cools the motor using the air conditioning system.
All of the fun and excitement that ensues comes at a hefty price tag. As tested, the Model S P100D costs $148,000.
