These Are The Intel SSDs Blocked From Microsoft’s Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Earlier this week, Microsoft issued a notice that it was actively blocking some PCs from receiving its April 2018 Update for Windows 10 because it was causing problems with certain Intel-brand solid state drive models. Microsoft did not specify which exact models were getting tripped up by the update, or even if the problem manifested itself on both SATA and PCIe drives. However, we now have our answer—the issue affects systems running an Intel SSD 600p or Intel SSD Pro 6000 series SSD.

As with before, the updated notice warns that systems with affected drives may crash or enter a UEFI screen after rebooting when upgrading to the April 2018 Update. As such, Microsoft is in the process of identifying all affected PCs as it attempts to block them from receiving the update.

"When attempting to upgrade to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, select devices with Intel SSD 600p series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p series may crash and enter a UEFI screen after reboot. Microsoft is working with OEM partners and Intel to identify and block devices with Intel SSD 600p series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p series from installing the April 2018 Update due to a known incompatibility that may cause performance and stability issues," Microsoft said.

If you own an affected model and are experiencing issues, Microsoft recommends rolling back to the previous version of Windows 10, build 1709. You can find directions for that here.

For everyone else, just hang tight—Microsoft is working on a fix to allow the April 2018 Update to install and run properly on systems with an affect Intel SSD model. There's still no time frame on when that fix will arrive, only that we should expect it in the "near future."
