Tim Cook Defends Widely Panned iPhone 6s Battery Case
Apple's catching some flak over its new Smart Battery Case for iPhone 6s devices. It's a $99 case that promises to bump talk time up to 25 hours, Internet use up to 18 hours (on LTE), and video playback up to 20 hours, but at the expense of an unsightly bulge on its backside, to name one of the complaints. What does Apple CEO Tim Cook think about the hump?
"You know, I probably wouldn't call it a hump," Cook told Mashable during a recent coding event. "As you probably know from being a user of this now, one of the real insights here is, have you ever used other cases and tried to get them on?"
Cook went on to talk about the case's construction and how easy it is to install and take off of iPhone 6s devices. That ease of use comes courtesy of a soft elastomer hinge design. Indeed, sites that have tested the new case report that it's a noticeable difference compared to more rigid alternatives, most notably Mophie's cases.
Some have also viewed Apple's Smart Battery Case as an admission by the Cupertino outfit that battery life on the the iPhone 6s isn't where it needs to be. Cook had a response for that as well.
"If you're charging your phone every day, you probably don't need this at all. But if you're out hiking and you go on overnight trips, it's kind of nice to have," Cook said.
Cook is basically saying that the battery life on the iPhone 6s is just fine where it's at, but for users who will be away from a power source for an extended time, a battery case makes sense. This is Apple's first foray into that field, though likely not its last.
