T-Mobile Adds 2.3 Million Subscribers In Q3, Its Biggest Growth Quarter Ever

T-Mobile, the nation's fourth largest wireless carrier, closed out its best quarter ever of branded postpaid net additions, which totaled 1.4 million. Branded prepaid net additions more than doubled quarter-over-quarter to 1.2 billion, with T-Mobile adding a combined 2.3 million customers during Q3. In the past six months, T-Mobile has added 10 million total customers as it races to catch up with and surpass Sprint for the No. 3 sport.

"Despite our competitors’ best efforts, the Un-carrier revolution made huge advances in the third quarter with record net new customers," said John Legere, President and CEO of T-Mobile. "More proof of the resurgent strength of our brand and the massive momentum behind the Un-carrier consumer movement."

The nation's No. 4 wireless carrier now has 52.9 million customers. While Sprint hasn't yet announced third quarter earnings, the carrier reported having 54.4 million customers at the end of June, a slim lead that's been shrinking as Sprint loses customers.

"We will overtake Sprint this year, and next on our list is AT&T," T-Mobile CEO John Legere stated earlier this year.

T-Mobile sold 6.9 million smartphones during the third quarter of 2014, which represented 93 percent of all phones sold. That led in part to a 10.6 percent year-over-year bump in service revenues en route to $7.35 billion in total revenues. However, T-Mobile posted a net loss of $94 million,
