Untethered iOS 4.3.1 Jailbreak Pops Up, No Luck for iPad 2 Owners

Let's start with the good news. The iPhone Dev-Team over the weekend released their Pwnage Tool 4.2, which aside from sounding cool, it also brings untethered jailbreak support to iOS 4.3.1. The untethered exploit comes courtesy of Stefan Esser, a security researcher based in Germany. As the iPhone Dev-Team points out, it's ironic that Esser's first contribution to the iPhone jailbreak community was improved security.

Now, let's get to the bad news. The 4.3.1 untethering mojo works with the following devices:
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4 (GSM)
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad 1
  • AppleTV 2G (Pwnage Tool only for now)
Noticeably absent is the iPad 2, an odd omission considering it works with the iPad 1. But according to the Dev-Team, "the reason the untether won't work as-is on the iPad 2 is that it requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and the iPad 2 is not susceptible to either the Iimera1n or SHAfter bootrom exploits." Shucks.
