Users Report Apple iPad Pro Tablets Freezing After Extended Charging Sessions

Rumblings around the web from iPad Pro owners who report a bizarre issue with their newfangled Apple tablets are growing in number. Complaints are coming in through various forums on the web and social media sites that the 12.9-inch slate stops responding after long charging sessions, and the only recourse is to hard restart the device.

That's not a good sign for a tablet that, as Apple CEO Tim Cook expects, is supposed to cannibalize traditional notebook and desktop sales and kick start the post-PC era. We're paraphrasing a bit, but not really exaggerating. Even without the crazy talk, a frozen tablet fresh off the charger is a troubling symptom.

Here's what one user wrote on Apple's support forum:

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup. Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad Air 2 (sold it), deleted its back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40 percent so I charged it and went to bed. When I woke up it was 'dead'. It wouldn't wake up. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life. Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand. Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day. Came back to it, same thing. Dead. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing. I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad. I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Indeed, others are having the same issue, several of which responded to the post with affirmations that they too were experiencing frozen tablets.

It doesn't appear to matter if the iPad Pro is setup as a new device or if a user restores content from a previous iPad. And in at least one case, a user reports having to perform "multiple hard resets to bring [the iPad Pro] back to life."

Apple doesn't seem to have a handle on the growing problem just yet, as the solutions user report hearing from support reps are varied (and ineffectual).

If you're experiencing the issue as well, you can perform a hard reset by holding down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears, which usually takes about 10 seconds. Stay tuned for a more permanent solution (hopefully this is something Apple can fix with an iOS update).
