Verizon Enhancing 4G LTE Network Dubbed ‘XLTE’ With Spectrum Advances, 2X Bandwidth

Verizon, for all its done on net neutrality and other issues to anger consumers, has been the industry leader in 4G LTE deployments, and the company is stepping things up a notch on that front. Actually, by “a notch” we mean “doubling”; Verizon is deploying a new service called XLTE on Monday that will offer double the speed of current 4G LTE.

This is all still speculative. There has been no official announcement from Verizon, but Droid Life caught wind of it, and consistent leaker Evleaks posted an image that seems to confirm the above.

Droid Life’s sources revealed a few more details, including that the new network will actually be capable of faster peak speeds than the advertised doubling of 4G LTE. Customers won’t see any special XLTE indicators on their devices--they’ll still just say “4G LTE”--and they won’t have to update any device settings or update their phone plans.

One limitation is that only newer devices will be able to take advantage of the new speeds. We’ll be on the lookout for more on this story on Monday.
