Verizon Wireless Still Winning the 4G LTE Race, Will Launch 400th High Speed Territory Next Week
Verizon Wireless already boasts the most robust 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in the United States, and now it's announcing plans to expand to new territories well ahead of schedule, further distancing itself from the competition. On October 18th (a week from tomorrow), Big Red will flip the 4G LTE switch in its 400th market, at which time it will have officially met its goal of rolling out high speed cellular access to 400 territories two months ahead of schedule.
"This milestone and the growing success of our 4G LTE network signal that we at Verizon Wireless are keeping our commitment to our customers to provide them with the very best mobile broadband experience in the nation with the breadth and depth of our coverage as well as the quality of our service," said Nicola Palmer, chief technical officer of Verizon Wireless. "With 4G LTE technology so widespread and still growing, our customers can travel throughout the United States with a consistently outstanding 4G LTE experience enhanced by a growing number of LTE-enabled products and services."
When that 400th region goes live, VZW's overall 4G LTE coverage in the U.S. will be serving more than 245 million people. That's quite the jump from the end of the second quarter, when under 11 million people had 4G LTE access.
The next step for Big Red is to start looking beyond major cities. VZW says 17 rural carriers have announced their participation in the company's LTE in Rural America program, which seeks to "aggressively" build 4G LTE in under-served areas en route to covering over 90 percent of the U.S. population.
