WD Debuts New Sentinel Rack-Mount Storage Server for SMBs

WD has added to its SMB storage server line with the WD Sentinel RX4100, a 1U rack-mount server designed for ease of installation and setup as well as affordability. The server joins the Sentinel DX4000 in WD’s lineup.

The Sentinel RX4100 is available in capacities of 16TB (4 x 4TB), 12TB (4 x 3TB), or 8TB (4 x 2TB) with 4GB of DDR3-800 SODIMM RAM. It offers four 3.5-inch drive bays with a front-loading, hot swap design, and the drives are pre-configured in RAID 5 and feature automatic RAID rebuild. Under the hood is a dual-core Intel Atom processor

The unit also has two gigabit Ethernet ports, two USB 3.0 ports in the back, a USB 2.0 port in the front, and a VGA port. In addition to completely different form factors, the Sentinel RX4100 differs from the DX4000 here in that the former relies on an external display while the latter uses a built-in LCD display. The RX4100 also has both an internal power supply and an optional external power port for failover while the DX4000 simply has a pair of external power ports.

The dashboard for both WD SMB storage server devices is the same, and it comes with Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials for easy integration into Windows environments, but it’s also compatible with up to Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Linux.

The smaller 8TB-capacity Sentinel RX4100 will cost $1,899, while the 12TB and 16TB versions will come in at $1,999 and $2,349, respectively.
