Western Digital Releases S25 And RE SAS Enterprise Hard Drives

At this rate, it's getting pretty near impossible to keep track of exactly hard drives are released each month. Even this week, both Seagate and Western Digital have both released new drives, proving that the unspoken rivalry actually does exist. Today, WD announced availability of its second-generation WD S25 SAS drives and its latest WD RE SAS 3.5-inch drives for the traditional enterprise market. Of course, just because these are marked "enterprise" doesn't mean that they can't be purchased by regular folk who just need extra reliability (and are willing to pay the price premium).

The 2.5" S25 is a real burner. It spins at 10,000RPM and has a SAS 6Gb/s interface, offering lightning-fast performance in capacities of 450GB and 600GB. The WD S25 line, including the previously released 147 GB and 300 GB capacities, is designed for mission-critical server and storage systems. The new guys offer a 7200RPM spindle rate and a 6Gb/s interface, with capacities of 1TB and 2TB to be available. These are clearly aimed as SAN, NAS, DAS, networked surveillance systems and cloud storage, and we are left to guess that the price points are up there as well. But hey, if you need something that won't crack under pressure, it looks like these are it.
